1 Beat gestures: Synchronised with the flow of speech, these gestures mark rhythm.

2 Emblems: These are gestures with conventional, arbitrary meanings.

3 Iconic gestures: These visually mimic their meaning. ‘Iconic’ is word generally used by linguists to refer to things which make meaning by looking like or sounding like the things they represent.

4 Metaphoric gestures: these use movements of the hands to metaphorically represent things such as the passing of time.

5 Pointing: sometimes called ‘indexical’ or ‘deictic’ gestures, these, quite simply, point to things.
